Nursing home abuse and traumatic brain injuries

At the Law Office of Jojene E. Mills, P.C., we are on a crusade against elder abuse in California. We know that both you and your elderly loved one hate having to make the decision that he or she must go into a nursing home to receive the care they need.

Not only is this one of the most difficult decisions your family ever has to make, you are further devastated if and when you learn that your loved one is suffering or has suffered abuse or neglect at the hands of those into whose care he or she was entrusted.

Falls and TBIs

As reported in Academic Life in Emergency Medicine, falls are the most common reason why elderly people receive a traumatic brain injury. They are far more likely to fall, and fall more frequently, than younger people. Often these falls are the result of their not receiving the help they need to get out of bed, go to the bathroom, walk to the dining room or do any number of other common daily activities.

In a recent five-year period, over 142,000 elderly people were seen in an emergency room for a traumatic brain injury. Approximately 81,500 of them were admitted to the hospital, and at least 14,300 of these people died. Even among those who survived their TBI, their symptoms lasted longer and their outcomes were worse than younger people receiving similar TBIs.

Nursing home abuse and neglect is a serious issue. For more information on this subject, please visit our page on abuse and neglect of elderly people.
