What are the most common types of nursing home abuse?

When you check your loved one into a nursing home in Arizona, you trust that the doctors and staff will do their best to provide the ultimate care and protection. Unfortunately, in some cases this is not true. Nursing home abuse is a startling problem that seems to occur in every location and can happen to anyone. Being aware of the types of abuse can make it easier for you to spot it if it happens to someone you love.

AgingCare.com states that one type of abuse is financial. The signs of this can be as simple as someone signing your loved one up for unneeded magazine subscriptions or as extreme as stealing savings and pensions. Physical abuse is also a concern. You can watch for signs by paying attention to any burn marks, bruises, fractures or abrasions. If anything happens that seems odd, you should investigate further.

Psychological abuse can also happen in nursing homes. It can be difficult to detect because symptoms may seem similar to other conditions that come with old age. These can include withdrawal, mumbling and a jumpy or startled demeanor. Pay attention to the way caregivers treat your loved one and speak to him or her. Symptoms of neglect may include dehydration, malnutrition, hunger or sunken cheeks. Poor hygiene, bedsores and dirty bedding can also be signs of neglect.

Sexual abuse is another issue in nursing homes and can be recognized if your loved one has unexplained bruising on the inner thighs, a genital infection or a hard time sitting or walking. This information is meant to educate and should not be taken as legal advice.
